layers of retina
Cell types and layers in a typical vertebrate retina. Abbreviations for cell types: A, amacrine cell; B, bipolar cell; C, cone; G, ganglion cell; H, horizontal cell; R, rod. Abbreviations for retinal layers: RPE, retinal pigment epithelium; OS, outer segments (photosensitive regions) of rods and cones; ON, outer nuclear layer (cell bodies of rods and cones); OP, outer plexiform layer (Þrst synaptic layer, where photoreceptors synapse on bipolar and horizontal cells); IN, inner nuclear layer (cell bodies of retinal interneurons); IP, inner plexiform layer (second synaptic layer, where bipolar cells synapse on amacrine and ganglion cells); GC, ganglion cell layer; NF, nerve Þber layer (ganglion cell axons on their way to the optic nerve).
